Yasiin Bey Weighs In on Drake: Is the 6 God Hip-Hop or Pop?
In a recent episode of The Cutting Room Floor podcast, rap veteran Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, didn't hold back when sharing his candid thoughts about Drake. Known for his unfiltered opinions, Bey expressed his take on the 6 God's place in the music landscape.
When asked by host Omondi whether he considers Drake to be a representative of hip-hop, Bey hesitated before asserting that, in his view, Drake is more "pop" than hip-hop. Drawing a vivid analogy, he described the experience of hearing Drake's music in Target, suggesting that it feels compatible with shopping, often with an edge in certain instances.
Bey went on to humorously emphasize the likability of Drake's music, playfully commenting on the abundance of products and options while shopping. However, he also questioned the longevity of Drake's reign, pondering what would happen when the empire eventually collapses.
"What happens when the columns start buckling? Are we not in some early stage of that at this present hour?" Bey contemplated, challenging the sustainability of the current music empire. He also questioned the substance in Drake's message, asking, "What's in it for your audience apart from banging the pom-poms?"

Drake has yet to respond to Bey's remarks, but this isn't the first time the two have been at odds. Last year, following the release of his poetry book, Titles Ruin Everything, Drake expressed a desire for reviews from Instagram influencers rather than what he perceived as members of the "Mos Def fan club."
As the hip-hop community buzzes with reactions, only time will tell how Drake responds to Yasiin Bey's bold comments about his music and his place in the industry.
